In the run-up to the General Election, we’re going to be continuing to campaign on behalf of the Lib Dems. This snap election is coming up very quickly, and we’re suspending any and all of our own policy campaigning efforts until June 8th in order to support the party as a whole.
It’s likely that we’ll be taking a relatively back-seat role in these crucial few weeks, and where useful we’re ensuring that our passionate and dedicate team of committee members get as much time as possible for campaign activities including canvassing, parliamentary research, leafleting, and more. For our social media outlets and online campaigning, though, our priorities are as follows:
- Encourage voter turnout and persuade party members and potential activists to get out and campaign to get more Lib Dem MPs in the House of Commons
- Raise awareness of the Lib Dems’ radical, credible, effective policies on the legalisation of cannabis and help explain them to the electorate
- Campaign hard for a reformed electoral system and ensure more voters are aware of Conservative plans to further rig the system by making local and mayoral votes less democratic
- Ensure that more of the electorate are aware of Lib Dem policy on welfare, in particular the dramatic (and fully costed) reversals of nearly ten billion pounds’ worth of harsh cutbacks and welcome steps like providing income support for new small businesses.
Once the election campaign is over we’ll of course be returning to our core campaigning functions – but for the next few weeks, it’s vital that we do everything we can to get MPs into parliament who can stand up for radical liberal values and get the policies we believe in firmly onto the table.
